2013 CDCA National Specialty

A quick recap of the CDCA 2013 National Specialty Weekend!

Congratulations to all those who came, showed or just cheered on the Canaan Dogs. It was extra special to have our Best Of Breed winner - Torino - be owned by the late Merry Carol Houchard to whom the National Specialty was designated.

Congratulations also to the breeders and owners of our newest AKC titled CDs: new Champions Sam, Jez and Rumor, new Grand Champion Cayman and new (and breed first) Silver Grand Champion Mags.

Much thanks to those who helped plan and execute this national whether long distance or in person, or from the beginning or leaping in when you saw a need. (My apologies if I forgot anyone.) Annette Israel, April Lee, Julie Haddy, Chris Miller, Cynthia Dodson, Mike Houchard, Ethan Miller, Noelle Renteria, Kitty Burke, Mel Holloman, Donna Davison, Melinda Linton, Bryna Comsky, Joan Capaiu Greene, Denise Gordon, Richard Vulliet, Pamela Rosman, Carrie Cabrera and the host clubs & their committees - Prestige Specialty Clubs and the Douglassville, Atlanta and Newnan Kennel Clubs.

Hope to see all of you again and more in Minnesota next June! Stay tuned for more details as they are announced.

What is happening - a quick review for those not familiar with dog shows!

First the champions were judged - each dog not already judged was examined and moved individually. First the males and then the females. Then she had her two Veteran male class winners move around together, then the Winners Dog. Next was the Veteran bitch class winner and finally the Winners Bitch. Due to a larger number of dogs shown than handlers, some of these dogs were shown by friends, relatives, new acquaintances, etc.!

When Judge Van Camp starts pulling the dogs out, she is arranging them in her final awards order: first, Best of Breed, next Best of Winners (chosen between either the Winners Dog or Bitch), then Best of Opposite Sex. Select Awards go to a male and female respectively and are like first runner up of each sex. Finally, with this entry, she had up to two Awards of Merit for others of quality she wanted to recognize. She selected two of the Veterans.

Action at the table after she pointed was coordinating additional awards. Since the Winners Dog was from the Bred By class, he was also Best Bred By. She then selected between the two Awards of Merit to find her Best Veteran. Not shown, selection of Best Puppy between the winners of the puppy classes.

Big, concrete building with lighting that doesn't look great on video. You might want to watch with volume turned down - a lot of clapping, but an echoey building with a hound and toy show going on as well -- might cause your dogs to join in!
