2004 CDCA National Specialty

Message from the Chairperson
I would like to congratulate all the winners both at the Speciality and at
the Middleburg Breed Show, those that finished their titles and those that did
well on the Herding Instinct test. I want to especially thank all those Canaan
Dog people (and of course the 60 Canaan Dogs entered) who came and made the
Speciality a success.
I want to mention that the Speciality could not have been a success
without:
Carol O'Bryan & Cindy Grupp donating the fabulous wine for the
Hospitality and Banquet events.
Sandy Dudley who spent hours working with me and selected the outstanding
food for Hospitality -- I personnally couldn't get past the shrimp platter.
Sandy also was Show Secretary and arrived at 5am to help set up and stayed and
worked all day.
Chuck Dudley who also arrived at 5am and helped set up and then stood
outside in the nasty weather and stretched the parking lot ensuring that all
the cars & Rv's had a place to park.
Also Margo Milde (who is thinking about getting a CD) and Meir Ben-Dror,
both who also arrived at 5am to setup and then stayed afterward to takedown and
reset all the equipment.
I also want to thank the many, many CDCA members who did stay and helped
clean up and reset the equipment.
Jennie Larkin who helped me keep the Speciality on schedule.
Craig Oskow who MC'ed the CDCA Auction at the Banquet and raised $1,700.
Also to all the donors to the Auction, with practical, creative & fun
items.
All 70 attendees at the Banquet who made the Banquet a fun time.
Sylvia Gersman who came at 5am, worked all day and managed to work the CDCA
Auction keeping track of who bid for what and who paid.
Chris Miller for putting together the party favors for the Banquet.
Amanda Pough & Judy Rosenthal for selecting and bringing the nicest set
of Trophies, hand-crafted woodbury pewter, I have ever seen at a CDCA
Speciality. Even the agility game winners received a gorgeous pewter cup with
the CDCA logo.
Denise Gordon for arranging and managing the Herding Instinct Test on Sunday
where, I believe 33 Canaan Dogs participated.
I want to thank all the Judges, especially Myrna Shiboleth who traveled
from Israel, judged the Sweeps and then gave a critique of what she saw.
I want to apologize if I omitted anyone (and I'm sure I have) who helped
contribute to making this Speciality the best yet!
I am already looking forward to being in Rochester, MN, for the 2005 CDCA
Speciality.

2004 CDCA Herding Instinct Test Report
By Denise Gordon, Herding Chair
There was a record 33 Canaan Dogs entered in the 2004 CDCA National
Specialty herding instinct test held at Keepstone Farm in Berryville, Virginia,
on Sunday, October 24th. Two of those entered were For Exhibition
Only--Eastlands Kaleb ha Pere, CDCA-HCX ("Kaleb") owned by Cynthia Dodson and
David Golden, and Ch. Ze'ev Midbar ("Wolf") owned by Denise Gordon. The test
evaluator was Susan Rhoades, owner of Keepstone Farm and an AKC and American
Herding Breed Association (AHBA) judge. The weather tested the exhibitors with
rain and cool temperatures and the test pen soon became an area of maintaining
balance in the mud, but owners and dogs prevailed (there were also nearby water
hoses to return muddy dogs back to their original color).
Of the 31 dogs eligible for titles or qualifying scores, 24 successfully
passed the test, giving an 77.4% pass rate, which is one of the highest for a
non-Border Collie breed! Of the 24 Canaans, 15 earned their CDCA Herding
Certified (HC) title, 4 obtained their 2nd of the 3-required HC qualifying
scores for their Herding Certified Excellent (HCX) title, and 5 earned their
HCX titles, the most number earned within a single CDCA herding event! The
Best Herding Potential trophy, an 81/2" Gallery Edge tray with the CDCA logo,
offered in memory of CDCA Ch. Pleasant Hill Hanna Bat Yetta, CGC, HCX ("Hanna")
by Cynthia Dodson, David Golden and Eastlands Canaan Dogs, was awarded to
Ch. Hadar Ha'Aretz Tates Neshamele ("Lucy"), owned by Renee (Donaher) Kent.
