The 2003 CDCA National Specialty will be held in Hamilton, Ohio (near Cincinnati), during the Memorial Day weekend, May 23-27.
The 2003 National Specialty Chair is Denise Gordon.
If you plan to exhibit your dog(s) at the National Specialty and the 2 subsequent Cincinnati Kennel Club shows (including the Queen City Dog Training Club obedience trial), you will need to be on the Superintendent's mailing list. Please contact MB-F, Inc., directly.
The MB-F website does have the premium list in electronic form, either HTML or PDF; click on Show Information, then Show Calendar and scroll down to the section containing our show date of May 24, 2003 in Upcoming Shows to locate the Canaan Dog Club of America link. Our National Specialty is being held within a cluster of other specialties (the Memorial Day Weekend Cluster) under the auspices of the Buckeye Associated Specialties, Inc., so the premium list for will not be for the CDCA alone (there will be about 14 other specialties plus 2 days of Cincinnati Kennel Club shows listed).
Please note that Canaan Dogs are excused from the Saturday Queen City Dog Training Club obedience trial as we will be conducting our own obedience trial at the same show site on the same day. Canaan Dogs are allowed to participate in the Monday Queen City Dog Training Club obedience trial (held in conjunction with the Cincinnati Kennel Club's second-day show).
The annual awards banquet will be held on Saturday, May 24th, at the White House Inn with a cash bar starting at 6:00 PM and dinner being served at 7:00 PM. Entrees being offered are: Prime Rib with baked potato ($29.00), Chicken Lynchburg with vegetable of the day ($27.00), Lemon Whitefish with sauteed rice ($26.00), and Pasta and vegetables with fresh fruit ($25.00); all prices include beverages (coffee, iced tea, hot tea, and soft drinks with free refills), the restaurant's famous baked Alaska for dessert, and tax and gratuity. Reservation forms will be sent out in the newsletter or can be obtained from Denise Gordon (telephone: 513-542-7332; email: canaani at juno dot com). If you have a special dietary request (Kosher, no MSG, etc.), please note it in the Special Requests section of the form. Make checks payable to the CDCA. All reservations must arrive at Denise Gordon's residence no later than May 17th; no telephone or email reservations will be taken.
If you have any items you would like to donate to the annual auction held during the awards banquet, please contact Cindy Grupp via telephone (707-226-3353) or email (canaandog at starband dot net). Items do not necessarily have to be Canaan Dog related (though they are highly prized). If you want to donate, but can't make the auction, contact Denise Gordon (telephone: 513-542-7332 or email: canaani at juno dot com) for transportation arrangements.
At the Queen City Dog Training Club building, following the General Membership Meeting on Friday, May 23rd, all non-show dogs will be honored with a Canaan Companion Parade. Each owner will be given a chance to say a few words about their pet and a special memento will be given to each participant. Directions to the meeting will be at the front desk of the host hotel, the Baymont Inn, Rt. 4 (north of I-275).
Host Hotel: Baymont Inn, Cincinnati North, 12150 Springfield Pike, Cincinnati, OH 45246; Telephone: 513-671-2300; FAX: 513-671-7324. Located on St. Rt. 4 (Springfield Pike), just north of I-275 (the beltway around Cincinnati), it is approximately 20 minutes from the show site and is a very dog-friendly hotel. Amenities include a deluxe complimentary continental breakfast, elevator to upper floors, walking distance to several nearby restaurants and 10-screen cinema, less than 5 minutes drive to shopping malls, more restaurants, and county parks, and lots of grassy areas and trees for the dogs (scoops, bags and buckets will be provided). Each room will have coffee maker, hair dryer, iron and ironing board, free USA Today and Internet data port.
The room rate for the CDCA will be $49.00 (plus tax) for single king or 2-double bed rooms. The normal pet deposit is being waived for CDCA, but you will be responsible for any damage in your room. Room reservations must be made by May 9, 2003; after that date, any unreserved rooms will be released. They are holding a block of 30 rooms for the CDCA for Thursday, May 22-Wednesday, May 27; you must state that you are with the CDCA to receive the discount price.
There will be a limited number of parking spaces at the fairgrounds (showgrounds) for self-contained RVs! It will be a first come, first serve basis. There is no dumping area at the fairgrounds and a limited number of electrical hookups. Cost is $20/night.
There will be a herding instinct test to be held on Sunday, May 25, at the Brock farm located about 15-20 minutes drive from the show grounds. To allow for dogs showing on Sunday (and cooler time of the day), the test will tentatively begin at 5 PM and a potluck supper will be provided during the test. The sheep are dog-broke Cheviots and cross-breds and the tester is Vici Brock, an AHBA judge and herding instructor. Cost for the test is $20.00 (twenty dollars) per dog. It is highly recommended to pre-register as there is enough livestock to test 20 dogs (plus daylight factor) and while we will take day-of-test entries, all who pre-register will be tested first. If there is enough time, there will be a demonstration of trial level herding by experienced Canaan Dogs. Contact Denise Gordon (telephone: 513-542-7332 or email: canaani at juno dot com) for pre-entry form.
This show will be held indoors (it tends to rain some time during the Memorial Day weekend). With luck, we may get a barn to ourselves (floors are concrete with mats), which will allow enough area for grooming and crating. A luncheon will be held for all exhibitors, spectators, and friends of CDCA following the show.
