2001 CDCA Herding Instinct Test
On Wed., Oct. 10, the CDCA held its annual herding test at the farm of Nancy
Lee Obermark, an AKC and AHBA judge, in Southaven, Mississippi (about 40 min
from the host hotel in Memphis). There were 22 Canaan Dogs and 3 Australian
Shepherds (owned by Canaani folk who wanted to see if there Aussies could herd
and participated after all Canaans were tested). Of the 22 Canaani, 17 were
passed by Nancy as having herding instinct; this is a 77% pass rate (better
than any other herding non-Border Collie breed and possibly better than the
BC's, though I don't have the latest data from the BC parent club to confirm
this possibility)! Of the 17 Canaans that passed, 3 earned the CDCA Herding
Certified Excellent (HCX) award (for those dogs having passed 3 herding
instinct tests), 11 earned the CDCA Herding Certified (HC) award (for dogs
never having been instinct tested before), and 3 passed their 2nd HC leg
(towards the required 3 for HCX).
Congratulations to the below listed dogs (I'm listing call names here and
the registered names in the next issue of the Canaan Kibitzer) and their
owners!

Agility at the Specialty

Denise Gordon writes:
It took me awhile to find the information (because Onofrio
didn't post it), but according to the Clean Run website events for Tennessee,
the Greater Shelby KC is offering AKC agility Friday-Sunday, Oct. 12-14, during
the Memphis cluster (our National Specialty week). It will be held at the
Agricenter International (outdoors) with entries opening tomorrow (Aug. 22) and
closes on Sept 26; the random draw closes on Sept. 12. Judges are Cheri
Treber (Fri) and Tammi Skillman (Sat & Sun). Entry fees are $20 first
entry / $10 second entry.
Jennie Larkin writes:
Rally style obedience will be offered at the all breed shows on
Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13 and 14th. They'll be having both level I (on lead)
and level II (off lead). They will also have all the standard obedience
classes.
A Note from Our President:
Our Show Chair, Kelly Riggs, is hard at work to make our 30th Annual
National Specialty an event filled four days in Memphis. This is no small job
and Kelly and her husband Troy are currently our only members residing in
Tennessee. Volunteers are needed to work on the Specialty.
This year our National Specialty will be held in conjunction with the St.
Jude Showcase of Dogs. This event includes AKC judges seminars, two AKC
all-breed shows, several AKC-approved specialty shows besides the CDCA, AKC
obedience trials, three AKC agility trials, as well as non-AKC competitions and
Canine Good Citizen testing. There will be demos for herding, retrieving,
pointing, lure coursing, Frisbee dogs, earthdogs, search and rescue, drug and
K-9 dogs, assistance dogs, and TV and movie celebrity dogs.
There will also be information booths for a number of canine organizations
including breed clubs. Since this will be our National Specialty weekend, to
make the CDCA booth extra special we need a committee of at least three to five
members to create and man the booth. The information booths will be in an
air-conditioned building and will be large enough to accommodate several dog
crates. We all know how wonderful our dogs are. The CDCA booth is an
opportunity to show the public what we all already know; that the Canaan Dog is
a fabulous all-purpose service dog.
