Obedience and Rally There were seven entries in rally and obedience. Three dogs in Rally (Taavi in Novice A, Smudge in Novice B, and Oz in Advanced and Excellent). Three dogs were entered in obedience — one in PreNovice (Bear) and two in Novice B (Smudge and Roxy). Bear got a 2nd place in prenovice, his very first time in the ring!!! Smudge and Roxy both showed in Novice B, but did not receive qualifying scores. Taavi also had his very first time in the rally ring (Rally Novice A) on Friday. He did not qualify, but he did impress everyone with his calm and handsome demeanor while waiting for his turn! Smudge did very nicely in Rally Novice B, earning a green Qualifying ribbon with a very nice score!! (94, I think). Oz and Eileen Qualified in both Rally Advanced B and Rally Excellent B on both Friday & Saturday (also picking up at least one placement ribbon). These two double Qs gave them their third and fourth double Qs towards their RAE title (they need ten in total). Thanks to Cynthia Grupp, Evan Kent, Renee Kent and Jennie Larkin. 2006 CDCA National Specialty Herding Instinct TestBy Denise Gordon This year's herding instinct test was held at Glenrose Farm in the hills of Jamul, California, on Monday, May 22, 2006. The drive from San Diego to the farm could best be described as “scenic” by some and “an adventure” by others as it was reached via highway, winding 2-lane mountain roads, and erosion-rutted gravel/dirt lanes. In addition, it was typical CDCA herding weather for the group of 15 Canaan Dogs and their owners - slightly windy with drizzle / rain. However, the drive was well worth its trouble and the sun eventually came out during the course of the day as the test evaluator, Laura Noll, owner of Glenrose Farm and an AKC/AHBA judge, observed the entrants working the wooly sheep in the large pen. Of the 14 dogs entered for evaluation, 10 passed, giving this year's test a 71.4% success rate, well above average in the 40-80% range for Canaan Dogs. The non-evaluated Canaan that day was CH. Madriver Samara Desert Star Dawn, CGC, RN, CDCA-HCX, PN, who was entered For Exhibition Only. Of the 10 Canaan Dogs that passed the test that day, 8 achieved their Herding Certified (HC) titles, 1 attained his Herding Certified Excellent (HCX) title, and 1 earned her second qualifying score of the required three for the HCX title. The “Best Rookie” trophy (for the Canaan Dog having no prior experience with livestock), a hand carved dogwood shepherd's crook donated by Denise Gordon in memory of “Wolf” (1993 Best Rookie), was awarded to HaTikva Cherrysh Taavi Dream (“Taavi”), owned by Risa Baumrind of New Harmony, Utah. The “Best Senior” herding trophy (for the Canaan Dog with any type of prior experience with livestock), a sheep motif candy dish, donated by Denise Gordon in memory of “Wolf”, was awarded to CH. Riverroc Three Sunrises Lyceum, HC (“Marley”), owned by Renee and Evan Kent of Wood River Junction, Rhode Island. Laura had excellent advise for all who entered, whether their dogs passed the test or not, and encouraged those owners of the latter group not to give up just because that day was not their day (for whatever reason) and everyone agreed that it was an enjoyable day, despite the usual weather. HERDING CERTIFIED EXCELLENT (HCX) Desert Star Running Miles, CGC, CDCA-HCX (“Miles”), owned by Rosette Davila-Sargent 2nd QUALIFYING SCORE FOR HCX CH. Riverroc Three Sunrises Lyceum, CDCA-HC(2) (“Marley”), owned by Renee and Evan Kent HERDING CERTIFIED (HC) HaTikva Cherrysh Taavi Dream, CDCA-HC (“Taavi”), owned by Risa Baumind Specialty ClothingThe CDCA is pleased to offer several different styles of shirts and blouses with a choice of two different 2006 CDCA National Specialty silk-screened art scenes as well as polo shirts, sueded sweatshirts and fleece jackets and vests embroidered with a Canaan Dog play bow. To order, please print off an order form, and mail the completed form with a check made payable to Teacher's Pet, to this address: Teacher's Pet National Specialty CatalogFor those wishing to put an ad in the National Specialty catalog, you need to get it to me with the appropriate fees as a CAMERA READY AD (this means I don't have to do anything to it, except send it to the Superintendent for publication) by the deadline of APRIL 7th. By anything, that means it must be the right page size (no reducing or enlarging is necessary), there are no spelling or font errors (some electronic files arrive with gibberish instead of the correct word because of the incompatiblity of fonts between computers), and any photos are cropped to size to fit the ad area (in the case of electronic files, they are of a high resolution so that they don't wash out or are blurry when printed as hard copy). Please keep in mind, the simpler the ad, the more impact. If you try to fill every inch with text and/or artwork or photo, the ad will not come off cleanly or look as nice when it is reduced by Bradshaw for final publication. Use fonts that have crisp, clean looking text (some script fonts can be unreadable when reduced). REMEMBER THAT ALL ADS MUST BE CAMERA READY. I don't have the time or computer capabilities to fix ads; they will be sent directly to Bradshaw as is and if it doesn't turn out like you wish, please keep that fact in mind when you call to complain. Bradshaw (the superintendent) said that full page ads must be formatted to 8 1/2" x 11" with 1/2" top and bottom margins, and 1" side margins. So half page and quarter ad sizes fall into 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" (same margins) and 2 1/8" x 2 3/4", respectively. Photos are only allowed in the full page ad and are an additional cost. The ad information (including costs) is listed in the premium list. If you've not yet gotten your premium list or you need further information, please feel free to contact me. Thanks, Awards BanquetMake your reservations for the CDCA Awards Banquet today! Use this handy dandy form. The shows will be out of doors at Qualcomm Stadium on the practice field of the San Diego Chargers. You couldn't ask for a better surface for any type of dog event.
